Condolence: We had the honor to meet Gloria and Chris on a trip to France with my father, Gorden K.Smith. I sat with them on the trip over and heard many wonderful stories of their family. It was with great pleasure that I encountered them on several other trips to France and always enjoyed both their company. What wonderful, kind people. I know they will be missed by all and our prayers go out to all the family. Margo Smith Shallcross

Condolence: I met Gloria and Chris in 1991 when I arrived from China to pursue my Master’s degree in Civil Engineering at URI. From the first time we met, they opened their home to me and helped me through the transition to life in America. We went on many trips together and did so many other things that I felt like a daughter with her parents. At this special time of the year, I want to share one remarkable thing that Gloria (mom) did every holiday season – buying and wrapping Santa’s presents for girls and boys in need! She always got their wish lists early and enjoyed shopping for the presents and wrapping them neatly with the most colorful paper. We always coordinated a day that I could come down to help, like an Elf in Mrs. Claus’s workshop! At the end, each girl and boy got a large bag full of presents! Gloria was the best Mrs. Claus every year. I will always cherish and share this story of Gloria’s enduring passion and generosity. May you and dad Chris live happily ever after in heaven. With love, Helen

Condolence: I offer my deepest sympathy to Jill, Walter, Gloria’s family, her caregivers and friends. For fourteen years Gloria was my next door neighbor at South Kingstown Jr High. I would stand in the hallway with her as the students passed between classes. Gloria had a kind word for everyone. I think of Gloria and Chris during this time of the year because of their kindness to others. I found a very old silver dollar in a laundromat while camping with my family in Tennessee. I gave it to an elderly women who was frantically looking for something she had lost. She then blessed me with good luck! Gloria heard the story as I told it on television. A few weeks later Gloria and Chris went Christmas shopping in Boston. The following Monday morning Gloria presented me with a little box as we stood in the hallway. I was stunned when I opened the box! It was a very old silver dollar of the same year as the one I had found. Gloria and Chris purchased it in a Boston coin shop. I have cherished their gift of kindness for over 31 years.

Condolence: Walter-So sad to learn about your Mom's passing. My connection to your family began in 1959 when your Dad and Mom invited student teachers at URI to a clambake at your Matunuck home. Chris,Gloria, and I shared many an afternoon watching you run X-country against CHARIHO; lo and behold, your Mon became my student-teacher at CHARIHO. For years, I associated with you parents at NEA-Retired meetings and luncheons. I miss BOTh of them for I considered them great friends.
May you Mom rest in peace, Jill and Walter.

Condolence: It was my sincere pleasure to care for Gloria these past two-plus years as she was failing. How wonderful of her daughter Jill to keep her caregivers so she'd have familiar faces to see every day. I got to know Gloria deeply. I'll miss her sense of humor, holding her hand, her impish smile and even her sarcasm. I just loved her.
The comfort in this is that she passed peacefully knowing that she was very much loved.
Thanks, Jill, for the trust you gave to Barbara and myself with her care.
