Obituary for Allan Bruce Forbes

Allan Bruce Forbes

It is with profound sadness that the family of Allan Bruce “Brucie” Forbes announce his passing into eternal life on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. He was the devoted husband of Esther (King) Forbes for 53 years and the loving Father of Allan (wife Donna) and Alana (husband Joyand) Forbes. Born in Fitts Village, St. James, Barbados, W.I. on January 13, 1939, to Allan and Violetta Editha (Hoyte) Forbes, Allan Bruce “Brucie” Forbes was one of eleven (11) children, five of whom have predeceased him: Basil, Joan, Monica, Nigel, and Benjamin. Surviving are Arden, Malcolm, Charles, Patricia, and Barbara.

An always-faithful churchgoer since he was young, Brucie especially enjoyed his Sunday service, hymns, and prayers. He was deeply involved in St. George’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York, attending services every Sunday and participating in all activities. He also loved his organizations - The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Friends of Barbados, and the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) to name a few. Bruce especially knew his way around the kitchen, with his favorite foods being baked Pork/Ham, Peas and Rice, and Bajan baked goods such as Coconut Bread, Pone and Black Cake. Bruce believed food was love and would feed/fill his family/friends with it to no end. He was an excellent host who loved to entertain and always kept people laughing. Like most men of his era, Bruce was a ‘Jack-of-All-Trades’ and ‘Master of Many’; if something needed to be fixed, Bruce was the man you would call and rely on at any time of the day or night. Throughout his life, he was an avid sports fan; he loved cricket and enjoyed boxing, football, baseball, and tennis.

Bruce began his career as a Seaman prior to immigrating to the U.S. in the 1960’s, after which he enjoyed a long and fruitful career as a Mechanical Engineer. Throughout his life, Bruce enjoyed serving in many roles including caretaker, friend, provider, and father to many, endearing himself to all with his wonderful sense of humor. He was known for “skinning his teet”, a definitive Forbes trait! Bruce balanced his kind and comedic nature with firm-but-always-fair discipline. He provided sound advice and led us all in the proper direction for life’s journey. Bruce carved out an amazing life for himself and his family by hard work, unconditional love, and trust in God. He and Esther were always there for each and every family member, regardless of the situation.

His legacy will proudly be carried on by his loving family. In addition to his wife, children, and surviving siblings, he will be eternally missed by his cherished grandchildren, Tatiana, Serena, Ariana and Aaron; his beloved nieces and nephews, Natasha, Walter “Junie”, Lorraine, Jackie, Abayomi, James “Timmy”, Dale, David, Darren, Diane, Charlaine, Adrian, Andrea, Alicia and Arden Jr, Vallan, Rosemary, and Michelle; his dear cousins & wingmen Radcliffe, Gregory, and Merna; and countless others in his large extended family.

Brave and warrior-like until the very end, he never complained about his illness, but waited patiently until the good Lord called him home. Although life will never be the same without him - he’ll be sorely missed at birthdays, holidays, each day, every day - it brings us comfort to know that he is no longer suffering. We will be eternally grateful for the wonderful life he had, all the fun and fond memories he left us with, and the awesome legacy for which we shall be forever proud.

Funeral services are being planned for Bruce in January, 2021 at St. George's Church in Brooklyn and later in the Spring/Summer of 2021 in Barbados followed by burial there. Further service details are pending due to the pandemic, but WILL BE POSTED HERE once finalized. R. I. P. , Bruce
