Obituary for Charles Picerno

“Charles from the Bunker” Our dear brother, Charles Picerno, 70, a freedom loving Nomad, currently of Johnston, passed away unexpectedly on July 4th, 2022, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. Born in Providence on April 7th, 1952. He was a cherished son of the late Michael P. and Elizabeth (Barrowclough) Picerno Jr. He is survived by his three brothers, Marc Picerno of Providence, Carl Picerno of West Palm Beach, FL and Walter Picerno of Lake Stevens, Washington along with two sisters, Mary Damiano of Johnston and Margaret (Meg) Watts of No. Providence. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends by whom he will be sorely missed. He was predeceased by one brother, Michael Picerno.

Charles was born and raised in a traditional, hardworking, Italian family, with many siblings, in the Federal Hill section of Providence. He attended Providence schools and became an auto mechanic. In his younger days he was hardworking and enjoyed working with his hands. He could be found in many auto junk yards laboring over removing of auto parts and then back at the shop rebuilding others. What he loved most was being free and unencumbered, he considered himself a nomad of no particular or specific address, he lived and traveled in his van at times, he traveled to California and lived there from 1974 to 1984 simply traveling and experiencing life as he saw it.

A Constitutionalist at heart, Charles was smart, strong minded, politically astute and had very strong opinions that he loved to share and debate with others. A registered Lobbyist for Freedom, he was a fierce Independent who ran for Congress in 2014 and 2018. A loyal talk radio listener, he became a regular on WPRO’s popular Matt Allan show and was known to many Rhode Islander’s as “Charles from the Bunker”. He was kind, quirky and always informative and interesting. He was a dear brother, loving uncle and kind friend.

Visitation for Charles, to which family and friends are respectfully invited to attend, will be held in the Berarducci Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Providence on Monday, July 11th, 2022, from 4-6 pm. Burial will be private.
