Obituary for Edward Thomas Marfeo Sr.

Our beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend is gone too soon, Edward Thomas Marfeo Sr., (Poppy) 72, of Cranston, passed away, unexpectedly at Rhode Island Hospital on March 15th, 2021, after a courageous battle with Covid-pneumonia.

First and foremost, Ed was an outstanding family man. He was a devoted father to his two loving children, Edward T. Marfeo Jr. and his wife Christine, of Cranston, and Sherry Ann Pina and her spouse Gary, of Johnston. He is also survived by his four siblings; a brother, Kenneth Marfeo and his wife Carol of Providence, and three sisters, MaryAnn Marfeo of Providence, Rosa DiSpirito of Coventry, and Eugenia Marfeo, of Providence; his 11 beautiful grandchildren, Megan, Jason, Paul, Jerrica, Gary, Justin, Zachary, Jasmine, Natalia, Narianna and Stephanie; and his10 wonderful great-grandchildren, Jarred, Jeremy, Michael, Kianna, Natalina, Christian, Jaelyn, Amelia, Audriana and Naveaha, all of whom he adored and cherished. Ed is also survived by his life friend and former spouse, Josephine Melise, and was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony and Savino Marfeo, a brother-in-law, David DiSpirito, and dear granddaughter, Alexis. He will be sorely missed by his trusted and devoted English Setter, Buddy who never left his side.

Ed was born in Providence on June 21, 1948 to Antonio and Eugenia (Olszewski) Marfeo and raised there in a large, traditional Italian Catholic, hardworking family. He valued family, hard work and integrity and instilled that in his own children and grandchildren. He had a strong religious faith and a strong work ethic. Ed was a dedicated Employee of the City of Providence and worked as a zoning and building inspector for many years before retiring.

Whether you called him, Ed, Eddy, Dad, Poppy or uncle, he was a dedicated and truly devoted family man with a huge and generous heart whose door was always open to family and friends alike. Upon entry to his kitchen, you would smell the best meatballs and gravy anyone ever had to which he would add his own homemade pasta. He loved to host his children and grandchildren for great holiday feasts and gatherings.

But make no mistake about it, he was a “man’s man” who loved everything outdoors. An active member of the Highland Rod & Gun Club of Foster and the NRA, Eddy loved sports. An avid Yankees' fan and devoted Boston Bruins fan, he also loved hunting, fishing and camping. It wasn’t uncommon to have pheasant in the big freezer or multiple sports games playing on different screens in the house at the same time or to get a call that Pops or Uncle wanted to go to target practice and needed you to be ready “early”. He was a rugged man with a kind and gentle soul who was most peaceful with nature, his fishing rods, rifles, and dog.

Services for Eddy will be private, burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cranston.
