Obituary for John Cavanagh

Our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, is gone too soon! John “Jackie” Cavanagh passed into eternal life on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Selfless beyond words, he had a good and generous heart, never turning down an opportunity to help a friend or family member in need.

Jackie had an amazing sense of humor which enabled him to make everyone laugh and endeared him to many. Socially engaged – NEVER distanced - he will be sorely missed by many.

Born and raised in South Boston, MA, he was a son of the late James and Margaret (Connors ) Cavanagh and was raised in “Southie” in a large, traditional, Irish Catholic home together with his siblings. With them, he enjoyed his childhood near and on the K Street Beach, often being pulled back to shore from the deeper waters which were the domain of the older kids by his trusted Lab, Buttons; such episodes were frequent and always to the delight of his siblings and friends!

Although he faced a somewhat difficult life, he never let it define him. He conquered many challenges, proudly earned a GED, and was as helpful as the day is long. Said his sister: “Jackie was a gentle soul, a friend to all, the guy who always helped you move, and the guy you called in the middle of the night to jump-start your car.” A life-of-the-party kind of guy, his creative and contorted dance moves were quite incredible and unique and enjoyed by all who witnessed them. An animal lover, he was especially fond of the canine species and his dogs were his best friends.

John leaves his wife, Karen (Logan) and son, John Cavanagh, both in Springhill Florida; siblings, Kevin, Carol, and Mary Cavanagh, and Patricia Managhan, all of Pembroke, MA; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Francis and James Cavanagh.
