Suddenly and quite unexpectedly, our dear aunt and friend, Lucille Alsfeld, affectionately called ‘Lu’, passed into eternal life on Monday, May 4th, at Hopkins Manor in North Providence. Married to John Alsfeld until his passing in 1991, Lucille was blessed with 87 wonderful years of a full and vibrant life.
Born in Providence on August 7, 1932 to Thomas and Sarah (Downey) Devlin, she was the youngest and last surviving of their seven children. Lucille enjoyed the love and traditions of being raised in a typical-of-the-times Irish Catholic family in Providence. She was educated in Providence Public Schools and was a proud member of the debate team and graduate of the storied Hope High School, Class of 1950.
The Alsfelds owned and operated the former Narragansett Manor at Narragansett Pier for a period of time during the 1960’s. During many years of their marriage, Lucille and John lived in the scenic Hudson River Valley of New York where she enjoyed a long career of increasingly more responsible positions in the insurance industry, ultimately retiring from the Kemper Group. Thereafter, she returned to Rhode Island, settling in North Providence.
Well read and well spoken, Lu was a keen and outspoken observer of the political scene, and liked you best if you were a party Democrat. An avid news watcher and critic, she remained sharp and conversant through current events. She endeared herself to family, friends, and the healthcare professionals at Hopkins Manor to whom much gratitude and appreciation is owed.
Aunt Lu is survived by her dear nieces and nephews, Meredith Nowak, Susan Spagnolo, Paul Bell, and Ronald Devlin, and their families. She was predeceased by her six siblings: Joseph, Thomas, Alice, and Virginia Devlin; Sarah Osborne; and Mary Bell. May they all now be reunited in the peace of Heaven.
Services for Lucille are being planned for a later date. Burial at a family lot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Greenwich is mandated private. Arrangements are entrusted to the Berarducci Homes.
