Obituary for Mathew Charles Oliver

Mathew Charles Oliver, 33, passed into eternal life on Monday, May 25, 2020. Born and raised in Maine, he was the beloved son of Laura (McMann) Oliver Hurley of Florida and the late Charles Oliver, and the step-son of John Hurley.

Mathew attended Deering High School and was a proud graduate of the acclaimed Youth Building Alternatives Program and later of Southern Maine Community College.

Although he thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of ‘rock and roll’ music of the 1970’s, and had a hearty and adventurous appetite, it was the quieter times in the Maine wilderness to which he gravitated, finding there his ultimate joy, peace, and solace. Fishing for countless hours in peaceful lakes at undisclosed locations in the Maine woods was his passion. And, being the minimalist that he was, his ‘no-frills’ camping expeditions in similar locations took a close second place.

Family first, nature second, construction third was Mathew’s life order; kindheartedness, selflessness, and humanitarianism were his hallmarks. Drawn from experiences constructing myriad and sundry tree-houses and forts in the forests, he participated in the noble work of the world renowned ‘Habitat for Humanity’ movement, constructing homes for the less fortunate. For all the foregoing, and his courage, caring, and contentment, he will be forever loved and fondly remembered by his family and friends.

Those mourning his passing include his daughter, Ivy Oliver, and her mother (Mathew’s former spouse), Sadie Price, both in Ohio; his sister, Megan Oliver, and brothers, Brian Oliver and Brenton Blais, all in Maine; step siblings, Sean and Caitlin Hurley in Maine; grandfathers, Brian Oliver and Millard Pray; his loving roommate, Karin Lopez in RI, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Besides his father, Mathew was predeceased by Grammy Pray, Nana Cunningham, and his life-long friend, Lindsay Trainor, with whom he shared a special bond.

Services for Mathew will be held in Maine at a later date. Memorial donations in honor of Mathew to the Preble Street Center, 38 Preble Street, Portland, ME 04101 would be appreciated.
