Obituary for R. Douglas "Doug" Cope PhD

R. Douglas Cope, PhD, 64, passed away at Rhode Island Hospital on October 6th, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late John R., and Marion (Toner) Cope of Michigan. He is survived by his three loving sisters, Melissa Zantello of Creedmoor, North Carolina, Marge Fagan of Avoca, Michigan and Marikay Cope of Orlando, Florida along with his brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews by whom he will be sorely missed.

Doug was a Professor of Latin American History at Brown University in Providence. He was a recipient of the William G. McLoughlin Award for Teaching Excellence in the Social Sciences, Brown University. He was a Fulbright Scholar and chose Mexico as his host country. He was also a beloved brother, friend, colleague and teacher. He was an avid reader, exceptional educator and published author. Doug was witty with a great personality, a kind and generous spirit who loved his students and loved to teach. He also enjoyed baseball, music, books and travel. He spoke several languages and was known as a thoughtful and unique gift giver. He lived simply and gave generously to over fifty of his favorite charities.
