Obituary for Samuel J Berman
Samuel Berman, 69, of East Providence, RI, passed peacefully at the Hope Hospice Care Center in Providence on Monday, April 27th, following a period of declining health.
Born of Newport, RI, ancestry on March 7, 1951 to the late Max and Sara (Meierovitz) Berman, he enjoyed childhood there with his family as the youngest of three children and the instigator amongst several mischievous cousins. It was there, too, where he began what was to become a life-long love of sports, music, and canine companionship through his beloved Beagle, Skipper. He later owned a German Shepard, Schultzie, from which he developed an affinity for that breed. Finally, during Adam’s youth, the family enjoyed a 14-year relationship with another, also named Skipper with whom he shared a special affection. He was an encyclopedia of baseball statistics, an early-in-life fan of the Boston Celtics, and a smooth player of the trombone.
Educated in Newport Public Schools, he was a proud graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1969. He went on to receive an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Providence College (PC) in 1973. Thereafter, he pursued a career in accounting and eventually in the hospitality industry, serving there for many years.
Sam’s love and focus on tennis in his earlier years led to his affinity for golf in later years, both sports taking him to play in select places in Newport, Hilton Head, and elsewhere. A long-time seasons’ ticket holder to PC Friars basketball, he was also an avid fan of the NY Yankees, NY Giants, and Boston Celtics. Well read, well spoken, and a political aficionado, Sam was also somewhat of a ‘foodie’, thoroughly enjoying large baked stuffed lobster and any deli sandwich featuring red meat. Cooking was a passion, with matzo ball soup his signature dish.
Sam is survived by his devoted son, Adam, and his wife, Sarah, in New York; his cherished granddaughter, Gabriella “Gabby”, who was thrilled by her weekly Skype sessions with her ‘Granddad’; his siblings David (Janice) Berman of Florida and Deborah (Mark) Luster of Connecticut; and former spouse, Judi (Buxbaum) Berman of East Providence. He also leaves several cousins and friends in many places.
